چکیده

We consider the rheology of soft-core frictionless disks in two dimensions in the neighborhood of the athermal jamming transition. From numerical simulations of bidisperse, overdamped, particles, we argue that the divergence of the viscosity below jamming is characteristic of the hard-core limit, independent of the particular soft-core interaction. We develop a mapping from soft-core to hardcore particles that recovers all the critical behavior found in earlier scaling analyses. Using this mapping we derive a duality relation that gives the exponent of the non-linear Herschel-Bulkley rheology above jamming in terms of the exponent of the diverging viscosity below jamming.

Rheology of soft colloids across the onset of rigidity: scaling behavior, thermal, and non-thermal responses.

We study the rheological behavior of colloidal suspensions composed of soft sub-micron-size hydrogel particles across the liquid-solid transition. The measured stress and strain-rate data, when normalized by thermal stress and time scales, suggest our systems reside in a regime wherein thermal effects are important. In a different vein, critical point scaling predictions for the jamming transit...

The Rheology of Jamming

Traffic jams are a common phenomenon on highways; when there are too many cars on the road the traffic gets stuck. A similar jamming phenomenon also occurs in yield-stress fluids that consist of a dispersion of a material in a liquid, such as suspensions of particles or polymers, foams or emulsions. At high concentrations, these materials behave like solids (like in traffic jams there is no flo...

Disentangling glass and jamming physics in the rheology of soft materials

The shear rheology of soft particle systems becomes complex at large density because crowding effects may induce a glass transition for Brownian particles or a jamming transition for non-Brownian systems. Here we successfully explore the hypothesis that the shear stress contributions from glass and jamming physics are ‘additive’. We show that the experimental flow curves measured in a large var...

Impact of attractive interactions on the rheology of dense athermal particles.

Using numerical simulations, the rheological response of an athermal assembly of soft particles with tunable attractive interactions is studied in the vicinity of jamming. At small attractions, a fragile solid develops and a finite yield stress is measured. Moreover, the measured flow curves have unstable regimes, which lead to persistent shear banding. These features are rationalized by establ...
